The Jack Russell is a unique dog. We highly recommend that prospective Jack Russell owners do extensive research about this terrier so they are familiar with what to expect from their new family member, or if this dog is a good choice for you. They are like no other breed. If you bring a Jack Russell into your home, they will expect to be part of your family. If you are looking for a dog to tie up out back and play with once in a while, a Jack Russell is not for you. If your Jack Russell is unhappy, he will make your life miserable.
You must remember that the history and development of these sturdy little dogs is centered around their hunting ability. They retain the traits that their ancestors were bred for, to go to ground in search of quarry. They will dig and they will chase small animals (including cats!) Jack Russells are curious, intelligent and often stubborn. If you don't have a sense of humor, don't get one! But if you do, you will find that other breeds of dogs suddenly seem a little dull...the Jack Russell's little brain is working all the time.
